Gastroenterology

The term Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to chronic inflammation of Gastrointestinal tract which appears in two conditions, Ulcerative Colitis, and Crohn’ s Disease.

The two conditions share some common traits, but are distinct entities regarding the clinical, endoscopic, histopathologic appearance, and their treatment.

Epidemiological data show an increase of IBD worldwide especially in the industrialized world.

IBD could be characterized as an autoimmune disease with genetic predisposition and environmental factors playing an important role. Both sexes are equally susceptible to IBD with an increased frequency in the age group of 20-30- and 50–70-year-old.

IBD is currently a very active area of scientific research, and with the advances of biomedical sciences and technology, significant progress has been made in the understanding of mechanism of inflammation, in the diagnosis, and the treatment of IBD.

IBS is a functional disorder of the bowel, which although not life-threatening, causes “alarming” symptoms that disrupt everyday life. IBS is quite common and usually is related to stressful situations. Some of the symptoms are abdominal pain, flatulence, alterations of bowel habits (diarrhea and/or constipation). Such symptoms appear during the day, while they subside during sleep.

Treatment of IBS
Despite the very considerable scientific efforts, no universal treatment has been found. Usual treatments include medicines, probiotics, and changes of dietary habits and of lifestyle.
